With Tom Cruise, Will Smith and Renée Zellweger all shooting films here and new studios popping up around the M25, the UK is vying to be No 1 movie maker.
When Keir Starmer gave a speech on Thursday about his “purposefully ambitious” plan for the country, it was telling that he chose to deliver it at Pinewood Studios. The vast complex in Buckinghamshire, which the prime minister called “the spiritual home” of Britain’s world-beating film industry and “a beacon to the world of British creative brilliance’’, has been home to James Bond films since the Sixties and is now the headquarters of the Marvel movies.
Among the projects shooting there at the moment are new Star Wars, Spider-Man and Fantastic Four films, as well as Judy, a black comedy starring Tom Cruise and directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, the quintuple Oscar winner who made Birdman and The Revenant.
